We All Have Ducts, but Do We Need to Clean Them?

Posted on June 24th, 2015 by DJR Cleaning Enterprises

The dictionary defines a duct as “a tube or passageway within the structure of a building or the body of a machine through which something may pass – such as gasses or electrical cables”. Ducts in your home or office can become blocked inside by dust, dirt, and debris. This means from time to time they will need to be cleaned so your HVAC system can function properly.

    Indoor Climate Control

Whether in the heat of summer or the cold of winter, we all wish to be within our comfort zones when we are indoors at home, work, shopping or any other sort of indoor establishment. Comfort in such places is reliant on a network of ducting conveying the treated result to the rooms where needed. This is achieved by blowing cool or warm air (depending on the season) through the ductwork.

An HVAC unit will have filtered this air before sending it out. It is extremely difficult to ensure that all solid particles are removed. Along with this, it is harder still to filter out microscopic organisms like fungus spores, viruses, bacteria, pollen and mites. Some of these might get blown out of the vents into the rooms, while others will collect in the ducting and build up over time.

    Cleaning Air Ducts

A slow decline in the quality of the air being blown into a room may go unnoticed for some time. Due to this, it is best to take early precautions rather than wait for it to become noticeably bad. You may be able to remove the vent and do a visual inspection, but a more effective way to clean your ducts is to call an air duct cleanings specialist to do a video inspection of the entire system. Then, when necessary, the contractor uses a specialized vacuum and other tools to remove all the contamination that has accumulated.

Needed my air ducts cleaned following a remodeling project. The house is 2000 sq ft. They cleaned all supply and return lines in my home. They also did the dryer vent line. The last one time the ducts were cleaned was about 20 years ago. The technician showed me that one of the supply lines wasn’t cleaned last time because there was no sheet metal sealing up the old hole. That was good to know. They also added a small hole to the runs to use an agitator in the duct. When they we’re done they closed up the panels and even taped all the seams. The extra cost and time to add that HVAC tape is a sign of a quality job. They seemed to have good equipment to do a good job. They spent a few hours at my house, really cleaning the lines well. I would recommend this company.

I had Dave come to clean the dryer vent and he also reattached the duct that was not installed properly when I purchased the dryer a month ago. I could feel heat and smell fabric softener every time I ran the dryer after he fixed it I haven’t had a problem since.
